Usually four to six weeks for a full re-plaster, less for a small patch, and longer in a cold or unventilated room. New plaster needs to dry right through before it is sealed, and it needs a watered-down mist coat first rather than neat emulsion, which will peel.
Yes, in most cases we can skim straight over it once it is stabilised. Heavily textured artex sometimes needs knocking back or overboarding first. Artex from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, so if yours is that age we will advise testing before anything is scraped or sanded.
We look at the cause first. Hairline settlement cracks can simply be filled. Cracks that are live, widening or stepped through brickwork are telling you something structural or damp-related is going on, and filling those is money wasted.
